The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the popular program wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… sort of.
“There are some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, one could always use the classics?
“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
