The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.

This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
