Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an raid targeting a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The criminal group breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, police confirmed.

The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their living quarters, according to a statement.

An educational worker was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.

Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.

Community members informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.

The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.

In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.

The assault in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis afflicting the area, causing relatives in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.
