SNAP Payments Expected to Expire for Over 40 Million During Continuing US Government Shutdown

USDA officials declared on Saturday that monthly food benefits under one of the country’s largest social assistance programs won't be issued in November due to the ongoing government funding lapse.

Closure Continues Through Its Third Week

The federal closure lasted three and a half weeks as officials revealed the news, in response to calls from over 200 House Democrats pushing agriculture officials to access reserve accounts to fund November's food assistance.

“Bottom line, funds are depleted,” officials announced. “Currently, there will be no benefits issued” on 1 November.

Millions Affected

Over 40 million Americans depend on these food benefits, as reported by official statistics. Some regions, including one southwestern state, use of this assistance is as high as 21% of residents.

Internal communications seen by Reuters revealed that USDA officials chose not to tap emergency reserves for the upcoming payments.

Legislative Deadlock

Congressional leaders continue to disagree over how to finance and restart the federal government.

Comments by the director at a prominent policy organization noted that federal leadership had chances to take earlier action to ensure continuous assistance.

“Officials were able and expected to taken steps weeks ago to get ready to utilize available money,” the remarks concluded. “Rather, they might decide against it for potential political benefit” as conservative leaders work to influence Democratic senators to approve a spending bill that would resume the federal government.

Local Responses

Executives in multiple regions activated emergency protocols in recent days to make money available to address food insecurity preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping next month.
