NY Introduces Online Platform for Public to Report ICE Images Following Arrests of Four American Citizens

The state attorney general has launched a fresh digital platform asking citizens to submit images and footage of federal immigration enforcement throughout New York. This action follows a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, triggering widespread protests.

American Citizens Held During Raid

A US congressman disclosed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were taken into custody and detained for "about 24 hours" after Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations broke out in New York on consecutive evenings.

"Each citizen has the right to reside free from terror," state officials wrote in a release.

"If you witnessed and documented ICE activity recently, I urge you to share that material with my office. We are committed to assessing these accounts and investigating any legal breaches."

Portal Features

The form includes options to submit images and video footage of the operation, plus a field to indicate location information. Prior to sending, users must check a checkbox that acknowledges that "the office may use any evidence provided in a public document, including in a legal proceeding or public report."

Information about the Manhattan Operation

The enforcement action, which witnesses say involved dozens of federal agents, took place in a popular district of Manhattan where counterfeit purses, items, goods and merchandise are commonly traded widely – often to tourists.

Footage of Tuesday's raid reveal several covered and weaponized personnel restraining and arresting a individual, and shoving away bystanders. Masses of locals pursued the personnel along the roads. An armored truck was also seen traveling down the Manhattan avenues.

Leadership Statements

At a news conference organized with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, said that four US citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where nationals should be detained for no reason." He noted the individuals were released on Wednesday with no legal action taken.

"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman said. "This is a armed campaign to create conflict. It is merely a excuse to generate turmoil for the government to bring in the troops to stop conflict that they themselves caused."

Broad Criticism

Fury over the ICE raid escalated – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the incident, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Yet again, the Trump administration opts for oppressive displays that create fear, instead of protection. It must stop," one mayoral candidate stated.

New York City community groups spoke out as well.

"Immigration agents descended on the neighborhood with tactical trucks, hooded officers and protective equipment to target local sellers working to survive. This action had no relation to public safety and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and communities," remarked the head of a major immigrant coalition.

Agency Rules

ICE policy prohibits the detention of US citizens and the organization has said it does not take into custody American nationals. Yet, independent reporting has revealed that more than 170 citizens have been taken illegally by federal agents during the period of the current administration.

Current Situation

ICE raids have been rising in frequency in NY and across the US this year.

A mid-October raid in central NYC was the initial documented operation on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Rallies opposing federal operations are ubiquitous including allegations of force and inhumane treatment.

Most recently, a document provided by civil rights groups stated medical neglect of women with child in government custody.
