Meteorologists have indicated a frosty start to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Fall Further

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
