The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
