Sir Keir is experiencing internal dissent after ministers dropped proposals to give workers day-one protection against unfair dismissal, a reversal violating the campaign commitments.
Lawmakers featuring a former minister who led the worker protection legislation raised objections over the climbdown declared by ministers.
Cabinet members have removed the proposal to scrap the 24-month eligibility timeframe for workers to file wrongful termination cases and permit them to act starting immediately in a new job, to try to get the proposed law through government.
The bill was caught in a dispute involving peers and MPs regarding the initial proposal to give workers the protection immediately, along with provisions to ban "exploitative" zero-hours contracts.
The government now intends to introduce the right over unfair dismissal following half a year employment as an alternative, whereas other immediate protections to fatherhood time off and health-related payments remain scheduled to go ahead, becoming active in the second quarter of 2026.
The Labour MP for the northeastern constituency characterized the decision as a "total abandonment" and vowed to push for its reversal.
"We are unable to endorse that compromise solution."
"This represents misguided policy and I plan to fight to reverse this让步."
Another Labour MP expressed frustration regarding insufficient discussion, observing: "There has been absence of dialogue with the PLP. Peers shouldn't override over a manifesto commitment, so why have we capitulated??"
A third Labour MP stated: "Employers have nothing to fear regarding first-day entitlements, while employees have much to lose from businesses who opposes immediate protections."
The former employment minister confirmed that the decision "undoubtedly constitutes a manifesto breach."
The learning department head explained remained a "substantial likelihood" the execution of the labor reform proposal would have been delayed without the cabinet's decision regarding a U-turn over day one protections against wrongful termination.
"Consultation has occurred regarding the issue of wrongful termination and the time period with employers, labor organizations and government, and following that discussion understanding has been reached about the way forward, which is welcome."
She emphasized that "This indicates the time limit will decrease from 730 days to 180 days, and this occurs simultaneously with important day-one rights around sick pay and concerning childbirth absence."
"But the risk here was had advancement not occurred, those crucial protections wouldn't come into force from April next year."
When questioned about whether it represented a broken promise, the secretary answered: "Throughout the campaign document, what we said was that we planned to cooperate with worker representatives, with business, with public organizations, through dialogue regarding such entitlements we intended to implement."
"So, there are both parts regarding that matter, within the manifesto, the important rights and the dialogue."
