A charity drive is aiming to launch a traditional song from Palestine to the top of the UK charts. The project aims to provide aid to Gaza's residents while also showcasing Palestinian artistic heritage.
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who performs on the track, stated that the song titled Lullaby represents a chance to show solidarity with Palestinians this festive season. He noted the potential for an surprise number one.
“It would be incredible if that happened, yes,” he stated. “I won't be completely let down if it doesn't manage to, Christmas singles are a category of their own.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who performs on the version of a traditional lullaby called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the track's defiant core message.
“It occupies a deeply meaningful spot for a lot of people,” Barghouti explained. “The message is that I would prefer a dignified death than spend my life without freedom. This is the primary message of the song; we seek to lead a respectful existence that we deserve as Palestinians.”
The track was produced after a solidarity show held in the autumn. First conceived to be performed and recorded live, the performance was omitted from the lengthy event due to the event running long.
The impressive roster of performers contributing to Lullaby features a range of well-known figures from the scene. All participated in the September show, which reportedly raised a significant sum for charitable causes.
Lullaby was produced by a group of producers and composers. The song blends a combination of the heritage language with freshly written English words.
The organizers behind the project have clarified that their objective is to generate maximum funds for a specific fund. These donations will be allocated to projects in Palestine through an non-profit partner.
“We don’t have a fixed goal,” a spokesperson said. “We aim for the maximum achievable. Naturally, the more the merrier. It all goes out to the people of Gaza.”
The context in the region was described as its profound destruction, with a huge proportion of property described as levelled or seriously harmed.
“In that context, a handful of millions won't make that much difference. But I think the significant factor is above all raising awareness for this issue and proving the human dimension of the story.”
The single 'Lullaby' is launching this Friday. Additionally, a complete film of the benefit event will be made available for streaming on a popular streaming site from later in the month.
