Apprehensions Carried Out in Relation to Supersized Illegal Waste Site

A pair of individuals have been detained as an element of an inquiry into the illegal deposit of thousands of tonnes of rubbish in a field in Oxfordshire.

Officials stated that a man in his late sixties was arrested at a residence in Hampshire's Andover, while a man in his fifties was taken into custody in Slough in association with the enormous pile of garbage dumped near Kidlington, Oxfordshire.

These detentions come after a recent revelation which exposed the existence of more than 500 unauthorized tips across England, including at least 11 so-called "major sites" larger than 20,000 metric tons.

A official for the environment authorities said that the detentions were for environmental and proceeds of crime crimes and were a "key step" in active probes. Both men have been set free on bail.

Magnitude of the Issue

The dump in Kidlington, located between the river Cherwell and the A34 highway, is believed to contain approximately 21,000 tonnes of waste in a mound which is up to 150m (490ft) in length and 6m (20ft) in height.

This pile of garbage is composed of what appears to be sorted domestic rubbish, shredded plastics, polystyrene, automobile tires and various household objects.

It represents just one example of 517 unlawful tips in England, at least 11 of which hold over 20,000 tons of garbage. These encompass a 280,000-tonne area in Cheshire, two 50,000-tonne areas in Lancashire county and Cornwall and a 36,000-tonne tip in the county of Kent.

"The administration is pledged to eradicating this kind of illegal activity in the UK, by augmenting funds to address waste crime, hiring more officers and introducing tougher measures and fines for those who violate the rules."

The arrests were carried out on a recent Thursday by personnel from a regional organised crime team and follow an previous apprehension of a 39-year-old from the Guildford region in the autumn. He was let go awaiting further enquiries.
